SELECTED PROJECTS

1.
Avant que la lettre: of grammatology remixed

Date: 2024
Medium: Product Mockup, Personal Project

This project reimagined Jacques Derrida’s 1967 de la Minuit editions book cover of De la Grammatologie with deconstructed ellipses to signify the philosopher’s contribution to the field of critical theory of the idea of linguistic deconstruction. The modulated shapes are meant to convey this idea by deconstructing their intended shape (signifié) into a modulated ellipse.

 2.
Simulacre:
a conversation with ChatGPT

Date: 2024
Medium: Digital collage with AI elements

Simulacre was a project that utilized collaged elements from the Creative Commons in the California Revealed’s collection and a conversation with ChatGPT about Jean Baudrillard’s ideas from Simulacra and Simulation.

A partial transcript of the conversation with ChatGPT is as follows:

DFB: Could you please paint me a picture of the computer simulation hypothesis?

ChatGPT: The computer simulation hypothesis suggests that our reality is not the "base" reality but instead a sophisticated simulation, likely run by an advanced civilization. Imagine a hyper-realistic virtual world where every atom, every force of nature, and even our consciousness are just lines of code running on an incomprehensibly powerful computational system.

Now, let's paint a picture:

---

You stand in a vast digital landscape, where the sky flickers slightly at the edges, like pixels struggling to load. The horizon bends subtly, its boundaries uncertain. Above, vast data streams flow like rivers of light, feeding the simulation with rules of physics, causality, and time.

In the distance, immense structures rise—architectures of pure logic and code, shimmering as though they are being rendered in real time. A sudden glitch: a bird in mid-flight freezes for a fraction of a second before resuming its path, as if reality had momentarily lagged.

Looking closer at your hand, you see not flesh, but an intricate web of data—binary threads woven together to create the illusion of physical form. You realize that even your thoughts might not be your own, but rather pre-written routines, responses determined by a complex AI.

Somewhere, beyond this simulated universe, a programmer watches, tweaking parameters, running experiments, and perhaps even adjusting your destiny with the press of a key.

Client project jeanwiley.art

Date: 2020-ongoing
Medium: Website
Client: Jean Wiley, formerly Wiley Design and Communications

This on-going site was built for the artist Jean Wiley to showcase her portfolio of paintings from the past couple of decades. Jean began painting after a successful entrepreneurial career founding and leading the graphic design firm, Wiley Design and Communications based in Sacramento, Ca. Jean began painting after closing WDC and has since gone on to study with esteemed teachers, internationally. This website houses her ongoing painted landscapes and experiments.
